How To Prepare Your Plumbing Before Going On Summer Vacation

Planning a summer vacation this year? If you’re going to be gone 3 weeks or more, then it’s a good idea to prepare your plumbing before you go! A plumbing accident can occur during any season – whether you’re home or away. Be prepared before you hop on a plane, train, or in the car to avoid coming back home to a catastrophe.

1. Turn Off Your Water

If no one is going to be home using your water for weeks, turn it off. You can turn off the main water valve and even shut off the individual water vales to the dishwasher and washing machine if you’d like to take that extra step. This can help prevent any accidents or damage if there’ an accident while you’re away.

2. Check Your Sprinkler System

Do you have a sprinkler system that runs automatically on a timer usually? If so, then you may want to consider turning that timer off if you won’t be home. The last thing you want to deal with is having any leaks or other issues with your sprinkler system as a result. If you’re worried about your grass dying, you could always have a neighbor keep an eye on your lawn and make sure the sprinkler system isn’t causing any problems in your absence.

3. Turn Your Water Heater Down

After all, no one is using the water heater so why not lower the temperature just a bit! Lowering it can help you save energy and keep costs low while you’re gone.

4. Check For Leaks

Check for any leaks in your home before you leave for vacation. This includes checking cracked hoses, outdoor faucets, indoor faucets, loose valves, and anywhere there’s a water source present – such as your bathroom or kitchen. This will help make sure you don’t come home from a relaxing vacation to a stressful disaster.

5. Have A Friend Check-In

A small leak can cause a huge mess if no one is there to see it and put a stop to it. Having a friend periodically check-in, especially if you’re going to be gone for a long time, is a good way to catch potential problems early on. You can even leave the number of your local plumber if they happen to run into issues that need immediate attention.

6. Schedule A Plumbing Inspection

Before you leave for an extended period of time, consider scheduling a plumbing inspection. This way, you can be confident you have nothing to worry about while you’re gone. Not only can this save you money and time, but it can also give you peace of mind. Who doesn’t want to enjoy vacation stress-free?
