Why Is My AC Leaking Water? 5 Common Reasons

If you notice water dripping from your air conditioner, you may be concerned about why and what this means. The last thing any homeowner wants to deal with is costly repairs, or water damage from the leak. When you notice your AC leaking water, it’s best that you turn off your unit until you have it checked out by a professional. While you wait for a professional HVAC technician, you may be scratching your head wondering why it’s leaking in the first place. There are 5 common reasons why your AC may be leaking water.

1. Clogged Condensate Drain Line

You may find your AC leaking water if the condensate drain line is clogged. A number of things can cause this to happen, including dust, dirt, mold, and other debris. Because the water can’t drain outside when you have a clog, it backs up and causes leaks.

2. Broken Condensate Pump

Usually, this is caused by improper installation. However, it can also be caused by an improper repair or it can just loosen over time. If your drain line disconnects, it can result in a water leak.

3. Not Enough Refrigerant

If you’re noticing a leaky AC, then you may be low on refrigerant. Low refrigerant means the pressure inside your AC unit is low, as well, which can cause leaks. Your refrigerant levels should never change, so if you’re low on refrigerant, this means you also likely have a refrigerant leak. Make sure to have your local technician check out your refrigerant levels if you suspect this is the cause of the AC water leak.

4. Rusted or Damaged Drain Pan

It’s not uncommon for your drain pan to rust over time, since it’s exposed to water on a daily basis. If your AC is older than 10-12 years, then your drain pan may be damaged from normal wear and tear over time. The water is supposed to flow into the drain line and then outside. However, a drain pan that has holes in it can cause condensate to leak through it instead.

5. Dirty Air Filter

You’ve probably heard this before, but an AC air filter must be changed every 1-3 months. If you don’t change your air filter, then it can get dirty and clogged, leading to obstruction of airflow. However, not only can this cause strain on your AC unit, but it can also cause your unit to freeze. When the evaporator coils get too cold and freeze up, ice forms around the unit. After the ice melts, water drips and you have a leak. Make sure to change your AC filter regularly to avoid freezing.
